From Hollymount, Co. Mayo, Paul Clesham began learning music at the age of eight, progressing quickly to learn the fiddle, accordion and the melodeon. He was taught by Bernie Geraghty from Ballindine, Co.Mayo for many years. He has won six All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil titles in Melodeon and Grúpaí Cheoil with Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann in Ballindine, and Céili Band with Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann in Foxford.
Paul won the Senior Concertina and Senior Accompaniment competitions at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2015. Since graduating with a first class honours degree in Music and Irish, he then progressed further to completing the BMus degree in UCC. Following completion of the BMus degree, Paul was awarded the Seán Ó Ríada memorial prize in UCC for Irish traditional music performance, along with being awarded the Mary V. Hart memorial prize for obtaining the highest result in the BMus examination for 2015 with another first class honours degree.
He was awarded a scholarship from UCC to study Music for a semester at the prestigious Wesleyan University, Connecticut, USA in 2012. Paul has just completed the MA in Ethnomusicology at UCC this year. He enjoys playing music with other people in various places around Cork, Munster and at various festivals, as well as around his native area in Mayo. He has a keen interest in Traditional Irish music, Classical music and many other genres of music from around the world. His music has enabled him to travel and perform in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Greece, Sweden and Tanzania.
